History:
The Psychiatric Nursing and Mental Health Department started in 1974. It provides educational opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students in different domains to prevent mental disorders, reduce the prevalence of mental illness and ensure the continued wellbeing of people, as well as to identify mental health problems and provide appropriate nursing care to patients with various psychiatric problems.
Mission:
The mission of the Psychiatric Nursing and Mental Health Department is to provide various educational opportunities in psychiatric nursing for undergraduate and postgraduate students. It aims to help students communicate effectively, think critically, intervene appropriately in the care of the clients and their families in a variety of clinical settings.
Vision:
The Psychiatric Nursing and Mental Health Department possesses the potentials that qualify its members to achieve excellence in undergraduate and graduate education and practice of psychiatric nursing. The department enhances psychiatric nursing education and practice on the national and international levels, and enables promotion of mental health and prevention of mental illness in the community.
Objectives:
- Develop and enhance knowledge and skills of student nurses in the care of clients with various psychiatric disorders.
- Develop skills of student nurses to utilize the concepts of psychiatric nursing in the different areas of nursing practice.
- Emphasize the concept of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention in the care of patients with psychiatric disorders.
- Develop a more positive attitude towards patients with psychiatric disorders.
- Provide continuing education programs for nurses working in the field of psychiatric nursing.
- Conduct researches aiming at expanding knowledge and improving practice of psychiatric nursing.
Scientific Degrees:
The department offers special courses needed to award the following scientific degrees:
- Master in Psychiatric Nursing and Mental Health.
- Doctorate in Psychiatric Nursing and Mental Health.
- Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing and Mental Health.
Diploma in the nursing of clients with substance-related disorders.
